When I wrote a manuscript in a VR space, I was surprised at its practicality Advantages and challenges of "virtual work" (page 1/4)

The idea of using VR at work has become more and more realistic over the past year.

"Why bother working in a VR space?"

It's because VR is there... I'm half-joking, but I have to use it properly. I've been testing it from time to time, but I've finally reached the stage where I can say, "I'm in an environment where I can work properly for a few hours."

This time, I would like to actually work using two solutions.

The writing of this manuscript was done entirely in VR, with the exception of some image organization.

This article is partly reprinted from the e-mail magazine "Kodera Nishida's 'Monday Lunch Buffet'" that is distributed every Monday. This article was delivered on October 4, 2021. In addition, a note version of "Kodera Nishida's Column Buffet" (980 yen per month, tax included) with additional content has also started.

I think I should dare to tell you the limitations of working with VR now.

Write a manuscript in VR space I was surprised by its practicality Advantages and problems of

The problem is really simple. The weight and discomfort of VR HMDs.

Working while wearing an HMD inevitably puts a strain on the head and face. This time I'm using "Oculus Quest 2", but it's heavy because it has a 321g "Quest 2 Elite strap battery" attached to the 503g body. If you don't use the Elite battery strap, it will be lighter, but the weight balance will be forward, so if you work for a long time, you will feel tired without it.

Oculus Quest 2 with Elite strap battery used. Batteries aren't essential, but if you're working for a long time, this is more comfortable because it improves the weight balance.

I don't think that everyone should do the same thing today. .

However. Please note that I have only mentioned the discomfort of wearing an HMD as an issue.

Actually, this is a big deal.

What do you do with the keyboard? "What is the application environment for working as usual?" "How easy is it to see the screen?" "Will I be able to relax and work while drinking tea?" "Will you know when you get a smartphone notification?"

There are many problems with VR that covers the field of vision, but the general problems listed above have reached a level where it can be said that "for the time being, it's okay".

In other words, "it has reached a level where you can do anything with a light and comfortable HMD"...

We are already able to work "while displaying a huge display" in "a vast space where you are alone" just by wearing an HMD.
